Illumination | 29 May
Join us on Friday 29 May from 5pm to see the lanterns illuminated.
Penninsula Kids is a collaboration between the artist collective Toxic Surf and students at Seaton High School, responding to the algae bloom crisis.
Over a four-week artist-in-residence program, more than 90 students from various year levels united to creatively explore and share the story of the toxic algae bloom crisis affecting South Australia's coastlines.
Building upon the collective narrative established by "Toxic Surf," these works poignantly highlight a community grappling with ecological grief, while also spotlighting campaigns addressing the harmful algal bloom, Karenia Mikimotoi, and its significant impact on our coastal environments and communities.
This collaboration not only captures the realities of ecological decline but also expresses hope for restoration and renewal.
The illuminated lanterns, featuring Port Jackson Sharks and Blue Weed Whiting, serve as memorials to species impacted by the devastating blooms, reminding us of the biodiversity at risk.
The Angasi Oysters installation advocates for the restoration of shellfish reefs—presenting a hopeful solution for healing our coastline and fostering a healthier ocean for the future.
Lime Green Festival provided students and the Toxic Surf collective with a valuable platform to share their artistic responses and celebrate their contributions to this ongoing collective story.
Special thanks to Zoe Brooks, Tony Hannan and the Toxic Surf team, the National Wine Centre, and the staff and students of Seaton High School.
